The airfield is a CAA licenced commercial airport and, as such, enjoys certain freedoms, the most important being the General Planning Dispensation Order (GPDO). It is also exempt from the power of compulsory purchase
(In accordance with the provisions of Class A, and paragraph A2 of part 18
(Aviation Department), Schedule 2, of the Town and Country Planning
(General Permitted Development) Order 1995, as relevant airport operator (within the meaning of Section 57 of the airports Act 1986), I hereby consult the Local Planning Authority on my intention to carry out the following development :- ----------
※ Carmarthenshire County Council views the airport as a business platform to develop and drive the potential socio economic growth in this part of the UK.
※ Currently 20,000 aircraft movements per year.
※ Two flying schools are in operation.
※ UK Ministry of Defence military aircraft re-fuelling contract for the past 15 years. 24,000 litres of jet fuel is sold to the MOD on average every week and increasing. Pembrey Airport is the preferred airport for the MOD since all equipment is military compatible, the staff are military trained for rotas running refuelling 24/7 and all the components are in place for military training, 5000 acres of forestry, seven miles of beach which the C130 Hercules currently use for practicing beach landings, an operational military range, and an airport for logistics and refuelling.
※ Pembrey Airport has a record of re-fuelling and turning around an Air Sea Rescue helicopter with full tanks and airborne within 7 minutes.
※ Pembrey Airport has office space available for rental and capacity to cater for a future aerospace technology park.
※ Pembrey Airport has 44.acres immediately available for construction
※ 200 acres of land north of the airport is available for development.
※ A new horse racing course (www.ffoslasracecourse.com) with all the latest facilities for year round racing opened in 2009 in close proximity to Pembrey Airport. This provides the opportunity for transportation of racehorses and the operation of executive aircraft for racehorse owners and trainers as well as the high end racing fraternity.
※ A 500 acre Country Park with ski slope and extensive leisure facilities adjoins the airport (Joint Venture with the Local Authority with planning for 400 holiday chalets).
※ Pembrey Airport has full potential for an eventual 3400 meters operational runway the same length as London Gatwick which would permit unrestricted take off and landings for very large aircraft. It would make the airport very competitive with other main airports in the UK.
※ Present runway of 800 meters could be lengthened to 1200 meters (within the original 2400 meters) with an investment of £ 600,000 (Six hundred thousand pounds) and this would enable bigger aircraft such as the Hercules C130 and Jets to operate. Further investment will enable the remainder of the runway to be brought into service to its original length of 2400 meters, land is also available to achieve 3400 meters
※ There is significant potential to develop Pembrey Airport as an air cargo hub. .
※ There have been informal discussions with several other aviation companies both in the UK and on the continent who have expressed interest to have bases at Pembrey Airport.
※ Pembrey Airport is the only airport in Wales on the direct railway line two London Paddington with two railway stations within a short distance. A scheduled bus route is also available and operates every twenty minutes at the main airport entrance.
※ The M4 motorway to London is within easy reach.
Runway and Airport Data
※ 4000 foot Code 2 runway with the potential to extend to 8600 feet
※ Cat 1-2 Fire classification which can be increased to Cat 6
※ Published Instrument approach
※ Navigation equipment for low visibility flying
※ Fuel capacity 26,000 litres including Jet A1, pressure and gravity
※ Flight training, Air traffic and fire officer training for UK and foreign students
※ Civil Aviation Authority approved Flight Operations Building
※ Flight Planning facilities with internet and meteorology data
※ Board room
※ Departure and Arrivals lounge
※ Restaurant with a seating capacity of 56
Pembrey Airport is situated in South Wales in a relatively sparsely populated region near the population centres of Llanelli, Carmarthen, Burry Port and Kidwelly. The immediate hinterland supports a race-course at Ffos Las www.ffoslasracecourse.com , a modern marina at Burry Port, a 500 acre Country Park with 7 miles of beaches and two golf courses at Machynyswww.machynys.com and Burry Port www.ashburnham.co.uk . The airport is situated within 580 acres of freehold land which belongs to Carmarthenshire County Council. This is available to investment groups.
The airport, a wartime airfield which has been developed, lies within a coastal region of some 2000 hectares of woodland. It is clear of the congested airspace of the south east and central spine of the UK and has the potential to provide an efficient service to future airlines whether cargo or passenger with its good surface road and rail infrastructure.
Construction has already started on an M4 link road from Crosshands to the Ffos las Racecourse. This road will ultimately join the airport access road, the motor circuit, the country park and Burry Port marina.
